Start the New Year right — help with tax prep at Masa!

On February 17th, Masa will be hosting a free tax prep day in partnership with Ariva.

If you’re interested in supporting this and other free tax preparation events during the upcoming tax season, helping families avoid expensive tax prep fees, *especially* if you speak Spanish, you can apply to become a volunteer with Ariva — you’ll get free, IRS-certified tax training and the opportunity to help out with 4 free tax prep days from January-April!

If you apply, don’t forget to mention you want to volunteer at Masa on February 17th!

We’re having a toy drive!

Do you want to bring holiday cheer to the kids at Masa? We’re having a holiday toy drive! We even created an Amazon wish list with a bunch of fun toys that Masa kids are sure to love: http://a.co/6t0x9yx

If you’d like to donate a toy, you can take or ship unwrapped toys (please no fake weapons or war-themed toys) — whether from the wish list or not — to our offices through December 22nd:

A big thanks to Masa’s volunteer committee!

Here at Masa, we’d like to share a huge congratulations and an enormous THANK YOU to Masa’s incredible Volunteer Committee, who ran a 5K/10K in late October (in the rain, no less) and fundraised $3,700 for Masa! We are so grateful for their efforts and proud to have them as part of #TeamMasa! You can see some pictures here.

Masa’s Family Fair for Hate-Free Schools is Tomorrow!

Masa Parents in Action (MPIA) is a committee of local parent leaders dedicated to improving the educational experiences of underserved families in the South Bronx, especially Latino and immigrant families.

Tomorrow, MPIA will host a Family Fair for Hate-Free Schools, an event to launch our campaign against race-based bullying, discrimination, and violence in our public schools. City-level trends show a rise in bullying in our schools: in 2016, 71% of students in grades 6-12 reported in the annual School Climate Survey that students harass and bully their peers; in 2017, that figure jumped to 81%. Similarly, in 2016, 51% of respondents said students bullied each other because of “race or ethnicity”; in 2017, 65% of students said kids bullied each other at school over “race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, or citizenship/ immigration status” – a 14-point jump.

MPIA recognizes that schools must be safe havens for all students and families, and is demanding that schools have the resources and support they need to create such an environment. Key event details appear below:

Date: Saturday, October 14th
Time: 1-4 PM
Location: Brook Park, 494 East 141st Street, Bronx, NY 10454 (at Brook Avenue)

We hope to see you tomorrow!

Preparing for Fall at Masa

Here at Masa we’re enjoying our Summer Pre-K Playgroup, Literacy Program, Robotics Program, and Youth Group. We recently took a group of families on a trip to the annual Great Fish Count on Randalls Island. Families had the chance to wade into the Harlem River and explore the area’s biodiversity. Check out some pictures below!

Welcoming summer at Masa

At Masa, we’re excited to start our summer program on Monday, July 10th! Our slate of summer programs include literacy, robotics, and youth programming. We’re excited to help children boost their reading skills during the critical summer months, support teams of young people as they collaborate to design robots, and provide a space for youth to connect and build community. We’ll share pictures in the coming weeks and months!

Events in May and June

Here at Masa, we’ve had a busy couple of weeks: on April 29, we had our annual community event for Día del Niño, which over 400 people attended (with the support of more than 50 volunteers!), and, on May 6, we held our annual Mothers’ Day event for families in our after-school programs. We’re looking forward to our last month of school-year programming and transitioning to the summer. In addition, we have a few workshops coming up:

  • Thursday, June 1st, 6-8 PM at Centro Comunitario Tlanezcalli: Immigrant Rights’ Workshop (supported by an attorney from Bronx Defenders)
  • Tuesday, June 6th, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM at Centro Comunitario Tlanezcalli: Workshop on the Designation of Person in Parental Relationship Form (a form to designate someone to manage basic care of your child in event of an emergency) (supported by an attorney from the Legal Aid Society)
  • Wednesday, June 7th, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM at Centro Comunitario Tlanezcalli: Workshop for parents who have concerns about their child’s development and/or whose children may have classmates with autism or other developmental delays

We hope you’ll join us at one (or all!) of these workshops!
